Innocent Bystander

Everything happened very fast after Hank crashed through the ceiling, disbanding the instruments. The police were everywhere and I found myself along with Heinz aside of Chief Carmouthe. The chief was a solid man, he knew what he wanted and normally got it.
He was already taking over and assuring the innocent crowd he had a handle on the situation.

When he turned to us I couldn’t help but feel two feet shorter. “I suppose you have a jolly good explanation for all this?”
Heinz didn’t show any uneasiness about Chief Carmouthe and promptly replied. “I do.”

“You do. Well, let us finish up and you can tell me about it, yes?” Carmouthe promptly turned and started yelling to a Sargent. “Bring him out of there!”

Heinz and I walked closer to the commotion and found Clay Emerson in cuffs being dragged away in protest.

“Looks like everyone has been caught.” I remarked.

“It does seem so.”

“Aren't you glad about it?” I asked, puzzled at his demeanor.

“Glad isn’t the right word.”

“What is the right word?”

“A very good question?”

I sighed. There was no getting anything out of Heinz if he didn’t want you to. I wondered where the boys had gone? I looked around the Gala, ladies in flowing dresses and men in fine suits were filling out, while the officers were milling about like bees. Just than I spied Lester and Sam slip out the door; they were gone. I wondered if I would see them again. It was very likely that the chief would put me on another duty seeing I failed in informing him in anything Heinz had done or planned.

I turned to Heinz who looked slightly pail. I looked to see what had made is normal ease slip, to see a fancy lady go out the door. If I didn’t have enough questions…

Chief Camouthe interrupted. “Alright you two, you have a lot of explaining to do.”

Heinz turned, his normal solid self again. “Well, Chief, it all started with Hank Wilson. Right out of jail he got in touch with Clay Emerson, the man who owns that opera on 5th Street. A man who turned to underground smuggling and shady dealings, after the opera went bankrupt. With his help they planned the whole thing.”

The chief and I found ourselves following Heinz back into the big room.

“You see Hank didn’t just want revenge on me, thought he wanted me to think so. He wanted revenge on the entire police department.
And when better to do that than tonight? With a full crowd of officers, with no one expecting a thing. It was quite brilliant if not quite mad.”

I looked at the table full of food, than to the diamonds meant for decoration.

“They put together this plot, and with some clever devices they got a whole wagon full of fake diamonds.”

“What for?” The chief remarked.

“I’m getting to that. These ‘diamonds’ were covered with wax, wax that was meant to melt at the party. Once melted they would set off an odor, a toxic odor that would, to Hank Wilson's liking, kill everyone at the party.”

“Than what stopped it from happening?”

“You see, I knew Hank was up to something. When sneaking around the opera house I found out about the plot . At my apartment I discovered, thanks to Lane spilling some wax, that I could deactivate the formula.
That is why no one was killed. My formula worked. You know the rest.”

The chief of police pondered the information. I did as well, Heinz hadn't told me half of this, although I was there at the time.

“We’ll take these diamonds away for testing, don’t want the wrong hands getting a hold of them. And I want to finish this down at the station. So be there detective.” He turned to me. “You too Lane.”

Oh, dear, I was in trouble.

******

Down at the police station, everything was busy, after all they had three men to check in, and there was paperwork to be filled out.

Darkness had set in and I couldn’t help but wish it wasn’t so dark. As the detective and I stepped into the station, everything stopped and the men stared at us. Great, the chief must have something special in mind.-
I stopped myself, why should he have it out for me and Heinz? We saved the day.

We passed the men and made our way into the office. Carmouthe looked up from his paperwork. “Shut the door.”

I shut it and heard everything outside start up again. The phone on the desk rang but the chief didn’t answer it.

He offered us a cigar. We both refused. “Okay, let’s get down to business, I want to know why I wasn’t informed of this earlier?” The question was directed at both of us, but I felt the full force of his dark stare.

“It was entirely my choice,” the detective said.

Carmouthe folded his fingers together. “Was it? And Lane didn’t have a choice?” His voice rose and I could see his anger flare.

I twisted my hat. “At the time sir I had nothing to report sir, I had no time sir.”

“Sure you didn’t, it’s nearly impossible to tell me anything.” The chief rose. He shook his head and sat down again. “No, no don’t say anything, I don’t want to hear it.”

I closed my mouth. I was no innocent bystander, but there was no way I was telling the chief some of those details I knew.

“Alright get out of here.” Carmouthe stood. “As of tomorrow, Lane, your back to your old post. And Heinz stay out of police work, do your dick work on a lower level.”

We left the room before he could yell anything else at us. Outside the station we parted ways, the detective took one sidewalk and I the other.
The mystery was over, even before I could fully understand it. Would I cross paths with Detective Heinz again? He most likely was glad I was off the job.
I was no longer his assistant. I let it set in and tried not to feel sad, why should I? He was so infuriating…. I stopped and looked back, he was gone already.

I found myself at my own place and let myself in. I would get a goodnight sleep, anyway. I lit a lamp and light flooded the room. I noticed a note on the letter stand and picked it up.

12 Things to do this Winter Inside

Hello has winter hit your part of the world yet? It has mine, but it could get warmer any day or it might not and I'll be freezing.

Now it is good to go outside and please do so. But today I have a list of things you can do inside.

Make a calendar

A new year is on the way. It can be fun to hand make a calendar or try making one on Canva, that is fun.

Color a picture

Find a coloring book and color a picture, maybe use it for your calendar.

Take fun/ weird pictures

Around the house you go and no one knows when the flash will strike.

Work on your Journal

Any journal stuff is fun. I need to get back to my art journal.

Decorate your room

Add something new. Maybe some sparkle?

Play a ping pong game

This game is fun. You get some ping pong balls, get a cup fill half with water, set it up on the floor, bounce the balls on the floor and try to get them to land in the cup.

Learn to knit / Knit something fun

Knitting is a lot of fun. Youtube has some great tutorials, maybe you could teach yourself something new. Or if you know how to knit do knit something. I just started on a Bennie.

Make food

I don't know, get in the kitchen and make something. I'm planning on making some cookies...

Do some crafts

You know a craft, but cooler, try something you saw on pinterest. Or make a card for a friend.

Read a magazine

My favorite magazine is Brio. But do read your favorite magazine. Or you could take apart said magazine and and make a craft out of it......

Do a dance

Yes you can dance, so put on that moven music and dance.

Listen to songs

Find some good songs and relax.

🔎🔎🔎🔎🔎🔎

And that is the list. Hope you find one or all of them interesting.

What do you like to do in the winter?
How is the weather in your area?

November 2019 Investigation

Sorry this is late. I've been sick and have not had the energy to write this.

But here we are in December and I am still on the mend, but I'm thankful for feeling better. Anyway here is a look at my month.

I didn't do NaNo, but I did try to write everyday. I was doing well until I got sick. I wrote a few works for 20 days.

It snowed a little. Now It's melted. I also sold my paint horse Ozzy. He is at a good home so I am happy. The horses above King, Rhubarb, and Sundance.

My sister sold her most of her Kittens. We have two left.

I didn't finish reading any books this month. I did read some magazines while sick on the couch. Western Horseman, Brio, and Horse&Rider. All great, so recommend.

I broke my camera...... which is the worst ever... I got another one for work. I can use it at home and for work, but I can't take it on trips if someone else has to do the pipeline work. So that is frustrating. I really don't want to spend the money on a new camera. The work camera has some interesting features though. As you can see from the b/w photos.

Me sick with my green head towel. My sister had a birthday. Thanksgiving was fine, sorry to say it again, but we were sick so, we had some good food at home with just us. I also wrote a list of things I was thankful for.

On the 25th I got this sweet little colt. His name is Han Solo/ Solo. He is a blue roan, a registered Quarter Horse. He looks darker right now, but in the summer he will be blue and white.

I've finally got to work with him some. I am planning to do colt to maturity with him in 4h. I'm also a member of AQHA now, (so I could get him in my name) and I might do a count the hours you ride, which I am super excited about. I won't be riding Solo yet, so Rhubarb and me might do the challenge.

Any way it's been a crazy month. Hope you are enjoying December! If you don't hear from me, than I was too lazy to post. I hope to get back to blogging so I hope that doesn't happen.

How was your November?
Are you getting ready for the new year?

Broken Harp

By Rakayle Hier
Words 1000+ a few

Heinz slipped into the crowd of ladies and gentlemen avoiding the men in uniform. He found himself near the diamonds and noticed that they began to sizzle. The acid from the purple goo was mixing with the gem’s wax which had covered the very fake diamonds, designed to be very toxic. The party was meant to be a trap for every one who came.

Where was the one responsible? Clay had disappeared from the crowd. Heinz made his way back toward the kitchen. He stopped suddenly when he came face to face with two very unhappy gangsters and Hank Wilson.

“Hello fellows.”

Hank sneered. “Get him.”

Heinz jumped away from their grabs slipping around them. Where was Lane?

He dashed away and through a side door.  Making his way around to the kitchen. There was going to be trouble and he needed some help.

****

Lane stepped out of the kitchen and found the party in full swing. Lane spotted the three men. They looked quite upset. Where was Heinz? Had he spotted them yet? Lane fingered the gun in his pocket. If he could help it he didn’t want to start anything here with the crowd. Maybe he should draw them away from the main room.

*******

Sam and Lester followed Clay Emerson. He made his way to the front door and picked up a bras telephone on a stand. He started to spin the dial.

“Who do you think he is calling?” Lester asked.

Sam frowned. “Trouble, no doubt. We got to stop him.”
The two sneaked closer.

“Pull the cord,” Sam whispered.

“He’ll see me.”

“Course he will, that’s why we run.”

“Course.”

Lester walked past and quickly pulled the telephone cord.

“Hay, you little brat, what do you think your doing!”

Lester didn’t waited for him to finish. He ran.

********

Lane straightened his jacket cuffs and rolled his shoulders. It was time to go.  No stalling. Lane stepped out from his corner when a hand stopped him. Lane jump. “Muerderation!”

“Shhh. It’s only me.” Heinz whispered. Lane gave Heinz a dirty look. If he gave him one more heart attack….

“What... do we have here?”

Lane turned to see the three men standing in front of them. All their hands went for their pockets.  “Wait.” Heinz raised his hand. They paused for a second. The middle man gave Heinz a sneer. “You just stay right there.” They each brought out a small pistol. “You don’t want to cause a scene, Hank. There are plenty of police around.”

Hank looked slightly around. “Alright, both of you, down the hallway.” They took the hallway that lead down to the stairs which lead to the rafters.

Lane wandered if Heinz had a plan. The gun in his pocket felt heavy, but there was no way he could get it, without the gangsters getting suspicious.

“Alright stop,” Hank commanded. “It’s about time.”

Heinz and Lane turned around.

“I will have my revenge.”

“Luckily that is not true.”

Hank gave Heinz a dark look, fingering the trigger of his gun at his side. Lane swallowed a lump in his throat, things were getting worse real fast. It was three against two and the gangsters already had their guns on out. They were dead.

A gun shot sounded startling Hank. Someone screamed. Heinz took his chance; he lunged forward grabbing Hank’s wrist. Before the two gangsters could react, Lane was on them with this revolver. “Don’t move.”

Hank struggled with Heinz for the gun. The detective got in position and punched the man in the face. Hank fell back but caught himself; it was too late, the gun flew out of his hand and skidded across the floor.

“Your not going to take me this time.” Hank got to his feet and took off. He opened the door leading up to the rafters, Heinz was close behind. Hank disappeared as Heinz got to the door, he looked back at Lane. “Remember the net.”

Lane didn’t have time to ask ‘why?’ He was gone. Lane kept his eyes on the two gangsters. “Throw down your guns.”

Very reluctantly they did as he said. “Now kick them over to me.” They kicked the weapons and they slid over. Without taking his eyes off the men, Lane knelt down and picked up the small pistols.

Lane finally had the nerve to try and figure out what the detective meant about the net. Lane glanced up. There it was, hanging, ready to be let loose, right above the two gangsters.

*****

Hank thundered up the steps and Heinz went after him. It was darker up there and Heinz found Hank out of sight. He look a breath and turned just in time to see a plank coming at him.

The board just missed his head, crashing into his shoulder bringing the detective to the floor with a groan. He rolled over as the board came at him again. He scrambled to his feet ducking as the mad man swung the board crazily at him. He backed up making his way toward the middle of the ceiling.

Heinz could hear commotion below. The gun shot had put everyone on edge. He didn’t take his eyes off Hank Wilson as the man advanced with a nice hitting stick.

The detective rubbed his sore shoulder eyeing everything around him, looking for a weapon. There were holes, but no loose boards. Heinz took another step and felt the board at his feet bend.
“You have nowhere to go gumshoe, it’s over.”

“Yes, your right, it is over.”

Hank lunged at him, but Heinz twisted out of the way pushing into Hank making him crash. Heinz spotted a rope hanging down and snatched it. Hank got up and turned on the detective. His brown eyes full of rage. He went for a quick stab at Heinz, and was met with a rope twisting around his board. Heinz pulled and ripped the board out of the man’s hands.

Heinz slammed Hank back to the wood floor. He heard a crack. Suddenly Hank kicked out and struck Heinz’s shin; he lost his balance and went down. Hank stood up gritting his teeth, he kicked Heinz in the side. He lifted his leg to kick again. Heinz caught it and pushed him back.

Hank stepped back, off balance. Heinz got up and punched him in the face again. He went down again and Heinz heard another crack.

Hank tried to get up, when the floor beneath him split. Heinz jumped off the week boards, just before they caved in, taking Hank with them.

Hank yelled until he hit the bottom with a sound of instruments scraping and crunching. Heinz saw him on top of a harp which was now broken into pieces. Hank Wilson was dead.

Guest Post

Today if you read the title I have a guest post. By my sister about bible camp. She is not a blogger... yet.

It's a little late. Hope you like it!

****
First, I should probably introduce myself, your guide. Hi, I'm Amariah, Kayle's
(thats Rakayle's nickname) younger sister. Today, I present to you a walk-through of
Camp 2019!
Sukkot 2019 was a blast and the best Sukkot yet!
We would have originally left on October 10th, but weather prevented our leaving;
therefore, we headed out on the 11th.
Here's the schedule of our journey!

On October 14th was the tea party.
Mom and I hosted a table, and my cousin Breanna and
I decorated the table

^ Our table won Most Elegant Tea Table title!

Heading to the tea party!

^ Hannah and Breanna at the candy themed table! (Lucky munchkins ;) )

One of my favorite little cousins Haddy (in her most beautiful dress ever) posing with
Grandma

That night at the market place a lady I met at the tea party introduce me to someone with my
same name! Now there happens to be an Amaryah that's a guy and an Amariah that's a girl at
Sukkot---so don't get too confused (I got confused a few times, seriously,
for the longest time I thought I was the only Amariah)!

Tuesday morning teen games. We played dodgeball.
Words of Advice: Don't get hit in the head, it hurts, it doesn't count as getting out; but it'll hurt.
Don't stand directly behind someone thinking it will protect you, it won't.
Throw the ball please or hand it to me to throw or someone else to throw.
And don't be scared, have fun!

Every day at 1:00 pm we had teen/youth dance practice! From the left and around the circle is
Me, Bethany, Kaylah, Kayle, Karlye, and Faith! You all are awesome dancers!

^Emma (extented friend-sister)  finally showed up on Tuesday

Wednesday and Thursday we had service. We danced and went to teen bible class

Saturday was Picture day!

Kids and Grandma and Grandpa picture

Family pictures are "sane" until

until someone gets crazy...

Family pictures always get crazy. its the fact of family picture day.

Practiced for special music night which was on Sunday night.
We did the teen/youth dance, Kayle sang a song she had wrote, I played fiddle
(Battle Hymn of the Republic), and with a group of friends we danced to "Heartbeat"
By Bekah Shae. Yo-yo man did a cool dance, Amaryah sang a fantastic song, and Breanna;
Emma; and Hannah did the Preteen dance. There were more specials, of course, than just
these mentioned. Everyone did a great job!
That night we had Tornado and Hail warnings,

(This picture is just too comical)
but Praise Yahweh we didn't get hit!
Monday morning we went home.
That’s a wrap! Hope you enjoyed the journey! I didn't include everything,
If I did it would have taken a week to get to the end!

I love all the signatures my shirt got! I miss you all and can't wait to see you next year!

*******

Me again...

What is a favorite camp memory of yours?
Have a great day!

It's Almost August

How is more than half the year gone by? I've been enjoying the summer. I love summer.  It's been a very rainy year which is so grea...
