Loss and Madness (continued short story)

Here is another short story this one is continued from the last one I did "Flowers have Mysteries". I got the idea from Blog battlers Here. So again I am doing this and continuing the story from Detective Heinz's view point. I don't do first POV a lot, but here goes....

Loss and Madness

Detective Heinz

By Rakayle Hier “950 word count”

Why does loss of persons or property make one go mad? This question plagued me of late. Was it because of the note and flowers? Yes, I would have to say so. I couldn’t just sit around; I must go talk to Sam and Lester.

I rose from behind my desk that still held the fragrant flowers and went over to my closet. I pulled out my overly fashionable coat that was to my distaste. After my other coat was incinerated involving my last case I hadn’t had the time to get a new one tailored. I pulled it out bringing other clothing with it. I slipped on the coat and looked out the office door. Lane wasn’t in sight.

I walked softly on the carpet and went down the stairs. My head darted around to where the secretary's office was. The door was closed. I jumped the last few stairs and made for the door in haste.

“Heinz,” Lane’s voice spoke as my hand rested on the nob. I ignored him and went out the door. He of course followed. I looked back to see him skipping after me one arm in his jacket and the other searching for the other arm hole.
“Where are you going?” he asked when he caught up to me, his jacket now on.
“I am going to meet Sam and Lester. I want to know more about this case.”

“It’s not even a case yet.” He pointed out.

I nodded, he was right, for now.

I walked briskly across the street, taking in the crisp morning smells. Smoke hung in the air. I detected fresh bread being baked and also the musty smell from all the rain that had been falling all week. The tea shop was my destination. I took my favorite seat right outside in front of the shop. It gave me the opportunity to study people that passed by.

Lane joined me. I assumed that the young fella had not chosen to be my assistant. It wasn’t of my choosing either. The chief of police Carmouthe thought I need an assistant and he sent Lane. Not that old Carmouthe is a kind soul, he just wanted someone to keep an eye one me. He has tried before. Giving me an assistant was his new plan.

After we were served tea, Sam and Lester showed up just as I expected.

“Lane, let me introduce you to Sam and Lester.”

The two boys, hardly eleven, greeted Lane with a hello. Lane on the other hand gave me a questioning look.

“Don’t be fooled by their age.” I smiled. “Sam and Lester are the most excellent sleuths for me. They can go places that I can not.”

“But…” Lane sputtered, “if Chief Carmouthe knew about this…”

“Well, Chief Carmouthe is not going to know about this. Is he?” I gave him a dark meaningful glare. I really felt quite sorry for Lane. He had only after all been with me a short time. He might even be useful, as long as he didn’t mess with all my plans that I have worked to perfection.

Lane gulped and avoided looking into my eyes.

I turned to the boys. “What do you have for me?”

Lester the brown head with a bushel of freckles on his face began. “I saw Hank Wilson leaving the police station. I recognized him right away, since ya know we helped on his case. Anyway I decided to follow him cuz you never know what these crooks are up to. He went to a hotel and checked in. I called Samie to come and watch for him while I went to investigate at the police station.”

Lester looked to Sam the shaggy ice blond. Sam smiled widely showing a missing tooth. “So I was tired of waiting, I decided to find out what room Ol’ Hank was staying in. Number 33.”

Lane interrupted, “Are you going to write that down?”

I rubbed my mustache. “No, I shall remember.”

Sam continued, “I went up to check his room and heard a conversation he was having with someone else. I heard Hank say ‘I’m going to get that gumshoe Heinz for everything he did to me.’ I didn’t stick around cuz they were leaving. I watched the two leave. It was Hank and some other guy in black. I tried to follow them, but they split up and I lost them.” Sam hung his head.

I patted his shoulder. “That’s alright Samie you will do better next time.” I raised my eyebrows. “Lester?”

Lester nodded. “It’s what you would expect, Hank got out for good behavior.”

I nodded taking in the information and filing it accordingly.

“Why does he want revenge anyway?” Lane asked, the only one clueless.

“Ah.” I sat back and sipped my tea. “That is a story worth going through. Hank Wilson’s wife died in an automobile accident. A cabbie was responsible. It was a tragic loss for him. It was a few months later, the cabbie was found dead. It was a quickly shut case as the police like it, but the cabbie’s wife asked me to find the truth.

“After some investigation I found the that the man had been poisoned by a very hard to detect poison. It didn’t take me long to prove that Hank Wilson was the killer. He was a strange chap, he almost seemed mad. The loss of family and murder are never good for the mind.”

“So we’re dealing with a lunatic?” Lane leaned forward his eyes wide.

I couldn’t help the smile that came to my lips. “A genius lunatic, but, yes, a lunatic nonetheless.”

Announcements /// Packing for the trip ////

Hi everyone it is getting close to me leaving for the trip... I wanted to talk about some announcements first, to let you all know what is going on with the blog while I am gone and some other things; lets get started.

So I know you want to more about my poem that is going to get published in a book. I really don't know a lot myself; like when it is going to be out to buy. Stay tuned because I will let you know when it is out.
I found out about the contest through the library. This place has a theme for a poem book each year. The theme this year was mystery and I just had to try it! This is such a huge step for me!!
I got a message on January 20 and they asked me to check out my poem before it went into print. I did and now I am just waiting for more info. You can go to https://www.thedramaticpen.com/ to find out a little more about the poetry books they have published before.

In the Scheduling department from now until sometime after getting back from my trip I will be posting only on Sunday. I have lots of stuff planned, but I can only plan so much.

WITH the packing stuff I just wanted to share a little on what I am packing.

This is my backpack I am taking on the plane it will have stuff for me to do and some overnight clothes, so we don't have to drag the big bags around.
What I am taking besides clothes in the bag is: A mystery game, my Kindle ( so i can keep in touch), snacks, my writing notebooks, a brush, hand moisturizer, gum, also a book, but I haven't decided which one I want to take.

Swim suit is an must, we will be by the beach.

Almost done packing the big bag. I always have a few last minuet things to pack.

Small cleansing face set and tooth brush and paste.

Been trying to decide which sweater I want to wear on the way down to Florida. It may not be cold down there but it is cold here. This picture above is one of my choices.

That is about it... the next post will be in a week on Sunday.
Hope every one has a good valentines day!

What do you like to pack?
Are you excited about the poetry book?
Tell me below. Love every comment!

Journal Tag

This is my first tag to do! I am not a constant journal writer but I have journaled some. Today you will go with me into the past and see a journal of sorts, of mine.

➽Thank whoever tagged you, then link to him/her and the creator(Melissa Gravitis).

➽Thanks Keturah for tagging me!!!

➼Go through your old journals (writing or otherwise), and share something from them: from world-building to sketches, to random quotes, to an entry, to short snippets of writing!

➼And if you feel like it needs explaining, go for it!

➼Tag at least five other bloggers. (we will see if I can tag than many)

➼Feel free to use the header image!

➼Have fun!

In this box is a series of writings I did, what else do you think is inside?

I first started typing from day to day in 2011. I talked about the day and what it was like outside.

I used my typewriter

I didn't do a lot and only wrote for one year it was interesting to go back and look through my writing. It is quite hard to read. There are a lot of typos. It is very hard to type on a typewriter. I kept these in a desk.

In 2017 I started some more typing. Some about life and some papers I wrote posts because I wanted to start a blog. These are much better but still hard to read.

I kept them in with the typewriter; they got a little crunched.

I had a lot of fun writing them. The only reason I stopped was because I didn't want to use all my ink up. I wanted to be able to use my typewriter for other things.

I have quite a few papers. I wrote about my day or about books or about my life and what I thought.
It all went on the paper. It was a great way to vent.

I you can read that small print, you might learn how I wrote with a typewriter/ me journaling.

I love my typewriter!
That is my one of my journals and probably a favorite.

I tag, Meg
and Emily G
I also tag you if you really want to do this tag.

Hope you liked this.
Have you ever typed on a typewriter?
What is your favorite way to journal?

Cutting Out My Pattern

Happy morning every one! Today I am going to talk about my sewing project again and how far I have come (which is not as far as it should be). I started out cutting my pattern for my jacket a while ago and I finally have that finished.

I think it was a month ago that I first started talking about my sewing project. I talked about getting all my tools together and what it would look like in the end. Well now I am on to the messy stuff, cutting out the pattern.

Okay here is where I am cutting out my interfacing. Every single peace has interfacing. That wasn't too hard to cut out just had to figure out how to lay the interfacing I needed about 4 yards.

Next I got out the green Velvet and went over which why I wanted to cut it. Since I had to cut out each peace individually I used the interfacing pieces. It made life easier.

After marking each piece with chalk I laid the interfacing out on the Velvet. I think it helped save on spacing. Looks kinda pretty.

Cutting it out wasn't as scary as I thought. I used my scissors instead of the rotary cutter because I thought they cut cleaner. They are very nice scissors!

After I got that put away (I am doing this is the living room where little boys are at play). I got out the next fabric for underlining. I only had 6 or 7  pieces to cut out. This black silky material was so hard to CUT OUT! I was freaking out for a little bit. Not sure if I am going to like this to sew with.

The next day I finished cutting out the underlining. It is not perfect but I will be sewing it onto the other fabric soon . I think it will straiten out and look okay.

Now that all the cutting is done I am moving back to my lair down stairs where my sewing machine is. This is where the magic happens everyone!

I will be testing out how to sew with Velvet when I get everything together.

What kind of fabric do you not like to cut out?
What is your favorite part of sewing?
What projects are you working on?

Tell me below. It doesn't have to be sewing related.

It's Almost August

How is more than half the year gone by? I've been enjoying the summer. I love summer.  It's been a very rainy year which is so grea...
