What a Good Story Needs.

You read books or watch moves and it seems like the best stoires have certain things that makes it better.

Now even the best concepts of ideas have to be done right or it won't be a good story.


                                             Mystery 


Okay yes I do like mystery but I am not being bias every good book or movie needs a little mystery. Either the character is trying to solve the mystery and you know who it is already. Mystery adds that suspense or that unknown question; what is going to happen?

Like in the movie How to Frame a Figg( a old movie you might not know), we know what is going on but Hollis A. Figg does not. He sets out with the help of his friends to clear his name.



Then there are some movies where you get to solve it with the detective or you get ripped off and they know something you don't so you had no chance... Anyway there are some stories when you know a secret about the character that no one else around the character knows like in the movie Mulan.




Let me think of a book... The Scarlet Pimpernel is a good one, Isabel catches onto a clue about her husband that had been a mystery to her. When you read the book you catch on what is happening and Isabel still must figure it out. It is a wild ride. There is plenty of mystery to keep you guessing, what is going to happen?








                                                                  Action 

Every good story needs some action. Some stories are full of lots of action but some only need a little. Super hero movies have lots but serous stories might have less. It doesn't have to be a lot from being a bomb exploding or a fight in the school. Something to keep things engaged and the pages turning. I love writing action and seem to always be looking for more ways to add some.

Indiana Jones has lots of action from getting through traps to airplane battles.


Take the movie Hoot there is some action when the kids try to stop the construction to save the owls. There is chase scenes and copes. There is a lot of fun stuff.

A book I like that has a lot of action is the Homelanders Series, there is action nonstop. It has all the action you would want for a action story. Gun fights, car chases, everything.

So maybe you are writing action packed adventure or a story about a bunch of kids trying to make a difference, some action can take your story far.

                                                   
                                           Humor 


A lot of the movies and books I already mentioned above have humor. Mulan has Mushu... do I have to say more boy is he funny, love Mushu.

How to Frame a Figg is more or less a comedy of course I was showing how even a comedy story can have some mystery.

I think humor is very important in a story even a horror could probably have some humor though I have never read one so it depends of course. A basic story should have some humor either it lightens the story or just brings life to it. Of course like anything it doesn't have to be a whole lot.

 The movie Courageous has the right amount of humor that gets you laughing so hard. It brings the story in a full circle with everything a good story needs; Action, little mystery, and humor.
If you have ever seen any of Kendrick Brothers films a lot of their films have the best of every thing.


To take a story that isn't a comedy, the movie Tomorrowland. It is kind of a future story about a place called Tomorrowland and the end of the world is coming. I don't want to give any spoilers away so I'll just say there are some funny parts. Okay I will say it if selective humor not every one will think it is funny I think any way. Idk.
To sum that up, humor is great who can disagree?


                                                 
                                                        In a nutshell 

There are many things that make a great story but these are about some of the most used and needed.

Some will probably say romance is something a story needs. A lot of stories have it yet it doesn't make it better or worse.

I have read and watched great movies that had little romance.
Story line is important and if your a good writer you can write a good story. Think about it though, what good story have you read or watched that didn't have at least one of these things?
A good story surely has all of them.

Like all the ones I have mentioned. So even if you are writing a romance or adventure or modern contemporary or even a salvation story, you can and should add some humor, action, and mystery.

Detective Movies

Movies about mystery and detectives that are fun and thrilling.

This is a list of good mystery movies with great detectives or at least funny detectives. So grab some popcorn and enjoy a good mystery film.

The Pink Panther (1963)



The Phantom is a jewel thief and  Inspector Clouseau has been after the thief for years but he slips through the Inspector's fingers every time. Inspector Clouseau is a good detective but only by accident and is always getting on his bosses nerves. The Pink Panther a gem is the Phantoms next target but Clouseau is off to Rome to catch him before the gem can be taken. The odds are against Inspector yet the  is so stupid he doesn't even see it.
This might not be too much of a mystery but is sure fun to watch and Clouseau is hilarious. There is a newer Pink Panther but no one can be Clouseau like Peter Sellers.  There are some more Pink Panther films with Inspector Clouseau that are good but some have a few bad scenes.

Ace Wonder 



Ace Wonder, ten year old detective is looking for a mystery for his latest graphic novel when he hears about a note left by Derek Morton's grandfather who just passed on. Soon they find more puzzles and troubles arises. Only staring for a short wile in town they will be on there way and the mystery could stay hidden forever. Is the pen the traitor or the pocket the only way to find out is follow the clues that are hidden in wooded objects. Will a treasure be at the end or something much more important.
This is a great family movie that will keep you guessing who the bad guy is until the end.

Nancy Drew (2007)



Nancy goes on a trip with here father to Los Angeles. She got to pick the house so what did she do? She picks a house with a mystery. The problem is her father wants her to stop sleuthing. So she tells him she will, but the mystery keeps getting bigger. Soon the danger thickens there might be more to the mystery of the house than Nancy first thought. With a new friend she sets out on a adventure through Los Angeles to find out why a actress was murdered.
I think this is a fun and thrilling mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Emil and the Detectives



Emil is going to his grandmothers he has some money for her.  It is stolen while he is sleeping. He goes after the man, the police wont help so he gets help from the detectives, five boys who are willing to catch the man. They might stop more than just a pickpocket.
This is a 1964 movies that is fun and you end up loving the detectives even if they might not always get it right the first time.

Minor Details



"Cheerleaders are ick and their going to get sick."
At a boarding school four girls soon discover a note saying everyone who is a cheerleader is going to get sick. When it happens they get worried. Soon the school is in a panic no one wants to eat the cafeteria food. Teaming up together they have to solve the mystery and find out who is making every one sick? And Why?
This is a cool movie and a you get a chance to try to solve the mystery.

Young Sherlock Holmes (1985)


Sherlock goes to boarding school and meets Watson. Young Sherlock is quick to solve any mystery any boy might challenge him with. A real mystery popes up and Sherlock and Watson get kicked out of the school. Strange deaths are at the center of the mystery.
This movie is not like the Young Sherlock Holmes book in my opinion it is not as good. It has a lot of frighting scenes that some people might not like. I didn't think it was that bad. It is sad at the end, that didn't surprise me because of reading the Sherlock Homes books. But if you like a thrilling mystery and a sinister bad guy who seems like this good guy, you just might like it.

Detective Cocoa

Today is National Cocoa day so I decided to do a post on cocoa, but not just any cocoa, detective cocoa.

First you need to get your ingredients together. I like candy cane cocoa mix but you can use whatever kind you want. Get your favorite cup. Mine is this detective cup I found at a thrift store. A Dick Tracy cup, a detective in a movie.
Okay next you need either milk or water. I like both.

Add as much cocoa you want. 

Now heat it up your choice in the microwave or on the stove, and pour it in your cup. 

I added some milk with my hot water.

Now taste and see if you like it. 

If you like it you can add some cream on top or marshmallows.

Now grab your Detective outfit and drink up.

Blank Mastermind Book Release Tour

One more thing...  I thought this was kind of a cool place to introduce some of the other characters.By the way Wolfgang is the narrator, a guy with amnesia; a mastermind who doesn't want to be a mastermind.

A short scene from Part 4 Going for a drive....

“Introduce me to the gang.” I adjusted the mirror so it focused on the car behind

us. It was still a ways back, but I could make out general outlines if I squinted.

“Ho boy.” News took a quick look over his shoulder, then looked forward and

rubbed his hands together. “Roy’s the kid driving with the toothpick in his teeth. Spiky

hair and sunglasses. You see ‘im?”

I nodded.

“He’s usually sort of the assigned getaway driver, since he’s the best at ignoring

speed limits. Been driving since his foot could reach the pedal without breaking the

moisture seal on his diaper.” Bad News pushed his hat back a little. “Correct me if I’m

wrong, but I think you’ve known him the longest?”

I wasn’t really in the position to correct anything, so I kept quiet, filing away the

information on the person in the driver’s seat behind us. The car started to veer a little

and I looked back down, correcting course. I pressed down a little harder. Give us a little

more time.

“Liza’s the one with turquoise hair in the passenger seat,” News continued. “She’s

the main mechanic. I mean . . . you do quite a bit too. She works out the plans and stuff

though.”

I moved my gaze to the head of turquoise hair. Quick to make judgments, but it

didn’t seem like that brightly colored of hair would usually top a brilliant mind.

“Mechanic for . . .?”

The giant didn’t seem to hear me. He glanced over his shoulder again. “Chris is

the older guy with the cowboy hat. He . . . talks to you and shoots stuff and swears a lot, I

guess.”

Oh yippee. Sounded like a productive role.

“And Cardboard is the little girl with the orange shirt and the big hair.”

It took effort not to veer the car off the road while I stared at the dark-skinned,

tiny child in the rearview mirror. The oldest she could possibly be was seven.

Cardboard?

“Is there . . . a reason she’s named Cardboard?”

Bad News shrugged. “She’s Roy’s kid. Roy likes naming things weird. And he

found her in a dumpster marked ‘Cardboard Only’, so he thought it would be pretty funny

to name her that.”

I looked over the faces again as the car got closer. The hotshot getaway car driver

. . . the turquoise haired mechanic . . . the sour-faced cowboy . . . and the little girl named

after a packaging material.

That wasn’t counting the elephant-sized enigma named Bad News in my

passenger seat.

And I was supposed to be their leader. Only I had amnesia and would kind of . . .

rather not be a criminal. Which left me the task of trying to convince them not to kill an

innocent teenage boy I’d already shot once.

Look up “predicament” in the dictionary. I’m pretty sure you’ll see some

reference to this situation.

Holy. Freaking. Smoke. I’ll have a mutiny on my hands. I’ll get Dallas killed. I’ll

get me killed. What am I doing . . .?

My head pounded and I tried not to hyperventilate. Think . . . there’s got to be

something to do . . .

Roy pushed his sunglasses up on his forehead and waved, pointing to the side of

the road.

Out of time.

Out of time, yes he is. What will happen? Can Wolfgang figure it out and not get killed?
